Bob McTavish has been an Australian surfing legend for more than four decades, and this week it’s been made official by FCS Surf inaugural legend award. I had the honour of photographing him at the Manly Festival of Surf.
50 years after starting out in surfing, Bob McTavish is still working in his own business McTavish Boards in Byron Bay.

Honouring a Legend – Bob McTavish. It is with great pleasure that we announce the inaugural recipient of the FCS Legend Shaper Award, a man who is a true pioneer of surfboard shaping and design, and an absolute gentleman, Bob McTavish. Bob’s influence on surfboard design and performance dating back to the 1960s is undeniable. Here’s a man who spearheaded the shortboard revolution and found new ways to ride waves. The fact that over 40 years later, he’s still in the bay and surfing daily is a testament to his love of the craft. Head to our bio to watch the full edit and gain insight into one of our industry’s most revered personalities. Congratulations Bob, and on behalf of the global surfing community… Thank you!
